What we believe

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God: believe also in me.

John 14:1

So why bother with the church and what does the Christian faith have to offer to today’s complicated world?

A good question! We are part of an age in which many decry Scotland’s rich Christian heritage and challenge the presuppositions and relevance of faith. Although society has changed, people have not. We are still humans. We still have to wrestle with the age-old questions of value, purpose and meaning. We still have to deal with the difficulties and the joys and problems of human experience. We still have to face the fact of our mortality.
Whilst, we do not offer instant answers to complicated questions, what we do offer is the opportunity to explore faith and develop our spirituality. At the heart of our ethos and activities is the belief that the God who revealed himself in Jesus Christ can be known and encountered and that our spirituality can both significantly enrich our living and prepare us for eternity. In Jesus Christ, we are offered ‘life in all its fullness’ in this life and the life to come.

Being a Christian involves not only a personal belief but much more —it can be about nurturing a relationship with God and connecting with others who share that faith. Many find that their faith grows deeper through community, support, and shared worship, which is what we try to cultivate as a body of believers here at Newbattle: St Nicholas Buccleuch, being part of a church can be an important part of the Christian journey.
